What are the benefits of Airflow and Polishing?

One of the services we offer here at Farsley Dental is airflow and polishing. Whilst it has many benefits to oral health, most people are unaware as to what it is, and what these benefits are. We think it’s important to educate our patients on the various dental services available to them to keep their teeth and gums in good condition. Therefore, allow us to explain airflow in more detail.

What is Airflow and Polishing?

Whilst technology continues to advance and transform the way we look at dentistry, airflow is a fairly modern and innovative service. Airflow uses a machine that cleans and polishes teeth with a mix of water, compressed air and fine powder particles. This is considered a far more superior method than traditional dental cleaning methods using scraping tools, which can be both time-consuming and uncomfortable for the patient.

Polishing is done to smooth the tooth surface, which then lowers the amount of plaque which has collected on the tooth surface area.

What are the benefits of Airflow and Polishing?

More Effective Cleaning – the powerful, yet controlled jet, air, and powder not only polishes but can reach deep into periodontal pockets removing up to a depth of 5mm.

Improved Patient Comfort – Anyone who has ever felt pain when their teeth have been scraped, with tools digging into their gums etc. However, air polishing is a more pleasant experience for the patient, with it being less gritty than the heavy paste used in traditional polishing.

Reduces Teeth Sensitivity – Airflow is perfect for anyone who suffers with sensitive teeth. This is due to the lack of contact and the absence of heat and vibration, and that the tiny micro particles of powder can fill any exposed dentine tubules and reduce dental sensitivity.

Airflow polishing is a great way to remove any stains and discolouration which have been caused by general life – which include smoking, red wine, and coffee as it not only removes dental plaque but also whitens teeth.
